Why Buy USA Made – It’s Your Choice

When making a purchase, the first consideration on a consumer’s mind is not, “Was this made in the USA?” The consumer’s first thoughts are usually, “how much does this cost,” “how long will this last,” or “is it worth this much?” These are all smart questions and their answers need to be addressed. However, they do not take into consideration the bigger picture.  Where is my money going?  Is it going into our economy or funding someone else’s?  Am I supporting a sweat shop?  In these rough economic times the American economy needs to be stimulated; that begins with being conscious of where your money is going.

Green Technology

What does “Green technology” mean to you?    To Eco Promotional Products, Inc, (EPP) it is technology that protects the Earth from further pollution, does not use our non-renewable resources and allows our clients to promote environmental savings.   Green technology can include: reusable products, energy savers, recycled products, RoHs Compliant products, technology run on solar power, techy products made from recycled materials, even USA made products because they are promoting fair wages and local materials.  Green technology does not mean avoiding buying the products you need but finding smarter alternatives in materials and manufacturing and researching how they can be disposed of when their product life is done.  It may also mean less devices and smarter platforms.

Greening Your Vocabulary – Confusing Terms Deciphered

The act of going green has caught on but our vocabulary has not.  The recent years have brought a wave of companies, products and people “going green.”  The informers of these groups throw words around such as “environmental stewardship,” “sustainability,” and “social compliance.”  We hear these words almost every day but if we were asked to define them, could we?  For a majority of people the answer would be no.  Let’s go back and re-learn some of the words and terms that define the green world.

Earth Day Everyday

Earth day began on April 22, 1970.  America was in the middle of the Vietnam War and protest was on the tips of everyone’s tongue.  Starting a day dedicated to the Earth was a foreign concept, “Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values” (Earth Day Network).  What began as a gamble became a movement that has lasted over 40 years.

High Lead Content in Grocery Totes

In an effort to go green many grocery stores are opting for reusable grocery totes rather than landfill bound plastic bags.  The problem with this eco-friendly switch is that the lead content in some of these bags has been found to be high.  The group Center for Consumer Freedom tested bags and found that 30 percent of those tested had lead content higher than the norm.  “Consumers should not be scared,” the group said but the Federal government needs to extend standards on lead to products other than children’s toys and paint.

Youth Environmental Symposium

As we move into an era of unprecedented environmental challenges and pressures, how can an ethic of environmental sustainability be meaningfully integrated across jobs and sectors? This was the question we asked Lake County high school students and teachers to consider at our 2010 Youth Environmental Symposium (Yes) Working for a Greener Planet. Part of the larger Business of Being Green program thrust in 2010, the symposium included twenty- two professionals from a range of job sectors from an urban planner, to a green chef, to a wildlife biologist, to a green entrepreneur among others to describe their job, their path, and how their work contributes to creating a more sustainable environment.

Corporate Holiday Giving-Environmental Responsibility Year-Round

The holidays are a time of fun, family, traditions and gifts.  During the holiday season many companies show their appreciation to their best customers and employees without concerning themselves with the environment when giving gifts.  The common misconceptions that green products cost more or are not as attractive as regular products usually causes them not to get considered.  But in this time of corporate social responsibility and with the scrutiny the public now puts on companies the need to be environmentally responsible is crucial.
